Dear Japanese friends,

Though we may not know each other, I believe we all love world peace. Yet to avoid war, one must understand history.

The 18th of September this year will be the 70th anniversary of the September 18th Incident. On that day 70 years back, the Japanese army blew up by themselves a section of the railway in the northern suburb of Shenyang, and falsely accused the Chinese army of attacking them. Taking the bombing as an excuse, the Japanese army launched the invasion of China. It is commonly estimated that the Japanese invasion caused 21 million casualties of Chinese army and civilians and economic losses of 100 billion US dollars. This tearful history of invasion lasting for more than ten years has been a deep trauma to all Chinese people. It damaged the friendship between China and Japan.

In recent years, a series of incidents have raised our concerns over the resurrection of the Japanese militarism, such as the Japanese right-wing forces erecting lighthouse in the Diaoyutai, the Ministry of Culture endorsing textbooks that distort the history of the Japanese invasion of China, and most recently the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi paying homage to the Yasukuni Shrine.

Today, while knowing the calamities caused by the atom bombs dropped to Japan by America, many younger Japanese friends do not understand that all these consequences arised as a result of the war then launched by the Japanese army. They even don't believe the historical fact of invasion launched by the Japanese army and their wartime atrocities.

Through this e-mail we hope to let you and your friends know the historical truth of the Japanese invasion and join us in safeguarding world peace.
